This outline states basic construction, test, and marking requirements for the safety of electrical and electrical/optical fiber cables that are for use in network-powered broadband communications systems as specified in Article 830 and other applicable parts of the National Electrical Code (NEC), ANSl/NFPA 70-2002. These cables ("broadband cables") are for use as fixed wiring within and between buildings and are also for service and drop use entering buildings and terminating at network interface units, which convert the broadband signal to its component voice, video, data, and interactive-service signals for distribution by the cables referenced in 1.17(a) - 1.17(e). Broadband cables are insulated for 300 volts (no marking) and are of the specific types and voltage ratings described in (a) - (0. The use hierarchy of these cables is described in (g).a) PLENUM CABLES - Type BLP (electrical) and Type BLP-OF (electrical/optical fiber). These types are for 0 - 100 volt Iow-power circuits. These types are for installation in buildings whereexposed in ducts, plenums, and other spaces used to transport environmental air [NEC 830.55(B)] and where exposed in vertical runs in a shaft or in vertical runs that penetrate more than one floor [NEC 830.55(C)(1)]. These types are also for other wiring installed exposed in buildings [NEC 830.55(D)]. These types are rated and marked "100 volts" or "100 V". b) RISER CABLES - Type BMR (electrical) and Type BMR-OF (electrical/optical fiber). Thesetypes are for 0 150 volt medium-power circuits. These types are for installation in buildingswhere exposed in vertical runs in a shaft or in vertical runs that penetrate more than one floor[NEC 830.54(B) and 830.55(C)(1)]. These types are also for exposed use outside and enteringbuildings [NEC 830.10(A)]. These types are rated and marked "150 volts" or "150 V". c) GENERAL-PURPOSE CABLES - Type BM (electrical) and Type BM-OF (electrical/optical fiber). These types are for 0 - 150 volt medium-power circuits. These types are for general use exposed in buildings [NEC 830.54(C) and 830.55(D)(1)], which does not include exposed use in risers (unless the shaft is fireproof with firestops at each floor) and does not include exposed use in plenums. These types are also for exposed use outside and entering buildings [NEC 830.10(A)]. These types are not for direct burial. These types are rated and marked "150 volts" or "150 V". d) OUTDOOR UNDERGROUND CABLES FOR MEDIUM-POWER CIRCUITS - Type BMU (electrical) and Type BMU-OF (electrical/optical fiber). These types are for 0 - 150 volt medium-power circuits. These types are for entering buildings in conduit [NEC 830.54(C), Exception]from direct burial [NEC 830.5(A)(1)]. These types are rated and marked "150 volts" or "150 V".

This Standard covers thermoplastic and rubber tapes for use as electrical insulation at not more than 600 V and at 80鳦 (176鳩) and lower temperatures on joints and splices in wires and cables in accordance with the National Electrical CodeANSI/NFPA 70. It is intended that rubber tape on a joint or splice be mechanically protected by a covering such as friction tape. Thermoplastic tape is acceptable without the additional mechanical protection. 1.2 The characteristic constituent of the thermoplastic tape covered in this Standard is either PVC (polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate), or PE (thermoplastic polyethylene). 1.1 The requirements of this Standard apply to Grades A and B acrylic-polymer-coated, silicone-polymer-coated, or vinyl-polymer-coated electrical sleeving that consists of closely woven fabric made from glass (see Table 1 for materials and ratings) and intended for use in equipment designed to be installed and used in accordance with the rules of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (CEC), or ANSI/NFPA 70, National Electrical Code (NEC). A product for use at temperatures greater than indicated in Clause 1.2 or a different polymer coating or fibre may be acceptable provided that (a) it meets the performance tests in this Standard; and (b) long-term heat-aging tests are conducted as covered in UL 746B or CAN/CSA-C22.2 No 0.17, using dielectric strength as a primary property and flammability as a secondary property. 1.2 These requirements apply to coated electrical sleeving having a standard temperature index classification of 105, 130, 155, 180, 200, 220, and 240 鳦. 1.3 These requirements apply to coated electrical sleeving intended for use in connection with the internal wiring of electrical devices and appliances located in dry or damp locations where it is not feasible to employ a standard insulated conductor, such as appliance-wiring material, specifically intended for the purpose. Coated electrical sleeving is intended for insulating one or more uninsulated or partially insulated conductors, bus bars, component leads, or assemblies of electrical components. Coated electrical sleeving may be employed in equipment where it is not subjected to repeated flexing or severe mechanical stress. 1.4 These requirements apply to oil-resistant coated electrical sleeving intended for occasional or intermittent contact with oil. 1.5 These requirements do not apply to unimpregnated or uncoated fabric sleeving, which is generally not considered acceptable for sole (functional) insulation because of the openings inherent in the weave construction of the sleeving fabric. 1.6 These requirements do not apply to tubing extruded with reinforcement, extruded electrical tubing, or tubing intended only for mechanical protection, since they are covered by other requirements. 1.7 These requirements do not apply to coated electrical sleeving when it is employed as splice insulation in an insulation system above 105 鳦 (Class A) operation. This new edition of ANSI/UL 1441, harmonized with CSA, includes the following changes in requirements: 1. Test Method for Volume Resistivity, 2. Flame Test Equipment Standardization, 3.
